Managing Risk
Theoretical This examination is to present a recommendation that the CFO and I can take a shot at together to advance into a strategy that helps each Risk Management office. In this proposition we will build up a framework to assess venture and money related hazard. In any case, Due to the way that there are two models that are conflicting we should make sense of approaches to cooperate to jump in the same spot to decrease disarray and taking care of business. In this proposition I will outline how to utilize the ERM Framework to address chance, will examine how to help the Insurance Marketing Process. Also I will talk about how to assess ââ¬Å"Risk Bearingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Risk Sharingâ⬠exercises, and how to help with actualizing a Workers' Compensation program that is reasonable and fair. Building up a procedure to distinguish hierarchical dangers will help the board in figuring out what dangers can affect technique and the accomplishment of authoritative objectives. A porti on of similar systems used to distinguish chances in regular hazard the board projects can be conveyed in an ERM program and incorporate both formal and casual techniques. (Youngberg, 2011).A effective undertaking hazard the executives (ERM) activity can influence the probability and outcomes of dangers emerging, just as convey benefits identified with better educated vital choices, fruitful conveyance of progress and expanded operational proficiency. To utilize the ERM Framework to address chance, I will follow the 5 stages that association uses to create and executing the ERM programs. Which is Identify and draw in an official level hero, for any association there ought to be somebody in control to settle on choice about specific strategies or project. This will decrease movement and everybody will be in a similar page. Second is to choose a controlling advisory group and working team. ââ¬Å"The advantage of the directing board of trustees is to build up a course of events for pro gram advancement. The advisory group meets quarterly to audit and furthermore to endorse venture, get status provides details regarding existing task and to survey vital arrangement for organizationâ⬠. (Youngberg, 2011). Third is to Review vital arrangement for association, which implies associations ought to know about the work vital direction. You canââ¬â¢t be a group head without knowing whatââ¬â¢s your association plan is. As expressed in the course text: the methodology plan ought to be inspected with the controlling advisory group and the working team to guarantee that the objectives and target are obviously expressed that ERM program bolster the current arrangement, and that contention don't ariseâ⬠(Youngberg, 2011). Fourth is to Identify and survey current hazard distinguishing proof instruments. Which mean the working team should survey all presence techniques to recognize risk. These strategies might be inward or outside to the association and might be forma l or casual. To wrap things up, ââ¬Å"the association ought to be order and offer asset records and reference materials, and distinguish topic specialists. For instance, the working team will be answerable for arranging the reference materials in an online library for simple referenceâ⬠. (Youngberg, 2011). Additionally follow the overviews and hazard talking with technique. To help the Insurance Marketing Process is to comprehend the means and to have a superior comprehension of how the procedure works. What I would do is before starting the advertising procedure with another association I would discover what are the goals and techniques for moving danger to the business protection commercial center. We both should meet up with an understanding and know about the current hazard financing plan before the procedure. Additionally to recognize and dissect potential guarantees. On the off chance that I need to pick whose will be my possible guarantor, this competitor should meet the entirety of the associations goals. Itââ¬â¢s likewise my obligation to work together with other possible associations and which applicants will the best transporter to work together with. The steps that will be taking are: ââ¬Å"Organizations ought to audit leaving money related arrangement, distinguish expected markets, gathering information and lose data, checking on misfortune estimate and get ready diagnostic outlines, creating program alternatives. Finish accommodation, submit to advertise, meet the financiers, acquire citations and perform near investigations, arranging place approaches and observing outcomes and relationshipâ⬠. (Youngberg, 2011). As indicated by wellbeing undertakings articles, Balancing Risk Bearing and Risk Sharing is a framework that is totally gambling bearing. The main role of a cost-designation framework is to energize interest in hazard the executives programs, diminish generally speaking expenses and the recurrence and seriousness of misfortun es, and offer proportionately in the expense of the program. The most straightforward approach to accomplish this is by designating the expenses to the gatherings that create them. A hazard sharing framework designates all clinical obligation costs with respect to each departmentââ¬â¢s introduction. The best possible designation framework for most associations lies somewhere close to these two boundaries. (Youngberg, 2011).The number of hazard sharing courses of action between wellbeing plans and suppliers developed quickly. All the more as of late, notwithstanding, there is proof that plans and suppliers in certain business sectors are losing enthusiasm for growing new or keeping existing danger sharing courses of action. A few elements have all the earmarks of being adding to this change: the money related precariousness of hazard bearing associations; buyer and supplier reaction against oversaw care; and an inexorably prohibitive administrative condition, which may reach out t o design supplier contracting courses of action. (Marsha R.Gold. 2003). Hazard sharing is alluring on a few fronts. For plans, it gives a system to controlling expenses; for suppliers, it protects their independence by moving to them duties regarding overseeing administration use, expenses, and quality. Be that as it may, it likewise has a drawback, especially if the measure of hazard moved is enormous or installments are not comparable with anticipated expenses. (Kleffner, A. Drohetrty, N. 1996) Many supplier associations have little experience overseeing danger and do not have the important framework to oversee it effectively. If the level of hazard moved to suppliers is beyond what they can retain, their proceeded with practicality, just as that of plans with whom they contract, might be risked. This in turns raises the probability that the level and nature of care accessible to enrollees could be adversely influenced. (Marsha R. Gold. 2003). Base of what the most significant fact or to assess Risk Bearingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Risk Sharingâ⬠exercises is whomever made the hazard ought to be urged to take an interest in chance administration cost and activities. From my point of view, workerââ¬â¢s pay can be characterized as the entirety of the prizes earned, for example, direct budgetary pay comprising of pay got as wages, pay rates, rewards and commissions gave at standard and predictable stretches. Roundabout budgetary pay including every single money related prize that are excluded from direct remuneration and can be comprehended to frame some portion of the implicit understanding between the business and representative, for example, benefits, leaves, retirement plans, instruction, and worker services.Non-monetary pay alluding to subjects, for example, vocation improvement and progression openings, open doors for acknowledgment, just as workplace and conditions by workers as an end-result of their work. In deciding powerful rewards, in any case, the un iqueness of every representative should likewise be thought of. Individuals have various needs or purposes behind working. The most fitting remuneration will meet these individual needs. To an enormous degree, sufficient or reasonable pay is in the brain of the worker. A decent remuneration methodology incorporates a harmony between interior value and outside seriousness. Pay and advantages influence the profitability and bliss of representatives, just as the capacity of your association to viably understand its destinations. It is for your potential benefit to guarantee that your workers are inventively redressed and educated of their advantages. (Gomez-Mejia, L. , and Wiseman, R. M. 1997). ConclusionDeveloping a procedure to distinguish hierarchical dangers will help the board in figuring out what dangers can affect system and the accomplishment of authoritative objectives. There a few devices to follow when filling in as a group, the two most basic strategy is utilized in ERM prog ram are overviews and hazard interviews. On the off chance that weââ¬â¢re going to function as a group we need to liberal and be mindful and attentive. Correspondence is the way to be fruitful in an association. Additionally following the five stages of creating and actualize an ERM program can help an association pushes ahead.

The various ways in which the poets present the theme of love and loss Essay Example For Students
The different manners by which the writers present the subject of adoration and misfortune Essay How on earth would you say you are ever going to clarify as far as science and material science so significant an organic marvel as first love? Albert Einstein. The subject of affection has consistently enlivened artists, scholars, and those fortunate in adoration also. Love is everything its supposed to be. It truly merits battling for, gambling everything for. What's more, the difficulty is, on the off chance that you dont hazard everything, you chance much more. A portion of the writers who are so enlivened by affection are John Clare, Christina Rossetti, Elizabeth Browning and Edith Nesbit who composed exemplary love sonnets. John Clare was an English rancher turned writer of the common world who composed numerous sonnets, articles and letters on adoration, legislative issues, sex, defilement, and so forth. Christina Rossetti was additionally an English artist who composed numerous melancholic sonnets with emblematic strict subjects. Elizabeth Browning was an acclaimed artist of Victorian England most popular for her sentiment with Robert Browning and her Sonnets From The Portuguese which is generally perused. Edith Nesbit was an English author, artist and essayist of stories for kids however her books and sonnets never increased a lot of acknowledgment as much as her accounts for youngsters. First Love by John Clare is a sentimental sonnet about all consuming, instant adoration. This sonnet is connected to love and misfortune, and has got all the sweet recollections of beginning to look all starry eyed at just because and all the torment for losing it simultaneously. How Do I Love Thee? by Elizabeth Browning is about a lady examining how she adores her significant other tremendously. This was her last sonnet presumably composed for her significant other. A Birthday by Christina Rossetti is a merry sonnet about nature loaded up with fruitfulness, and stuffed with nature symbolism. Recollect is additionally by Christina Rossetti, however is totally converse of A Birthday. Recall is loaded up with a ton of torment, and the artist is fixated on death and passing hangs all through the entire sonnet. Villegiature by Edith Nesbit is a sonnet about a contention among desire and reality. It demonstrates us sentimental ideas of what darlings should be. How would I Love Thee? what's more, Remember are the two pieces identifying with adoration and how it is joined with death. Despite the fact that in the manner by which the writers approach the subject is very unique. Recollect is a totally demise fixated sonnet and shows the energetic love Rossetti has for her darling. How Do I Love Thee? despite the fact that is still considerably more less upsetting than Remember. The sonnet begins like a numerical issue, let me tally the ways, estimating the various ways, the expansiveness and the tallness of how she adores him. In Remember there is even more a strong note, Remember me when Im left. The entire sonnet echoes with Remember me and shows the various ways how she is so fixated on death like, Remember me when Im gone far away into the quiet land. The sonnet starts with a sensible, levelheaded and legitimate route in How would we love thee? yet, it loses all objectivity by moving into otherworldliness. My spirit can reach, when feeling far out, For the parts of the bargains Ideal Grace. She implies that individuals are fit for affection in essential snapshots of time, yet snapshots of otherworldliness don't emerge in regular daily existence. In Remember we see that the lady is experiencing passing where she wouldn't like to give up her darling and is very unwilling to proceed onward or cut off this association. We know this by When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half go to go yet turning remain. In Brownings sonnet we see all the euphoric snapshots of adoration where love can be found in basic and common snapshots of life since affection is satisfaction, I love thee to the degree of consistently Most calm need, by sun and candlelight. Here we see the best examination of adoration made to sun where love is the light of the sun, however love can likewise be the warmth, the brutal beams of the candlelight. You let me know of our future that you arranged. Here the lady shows that her significant other who is in all out order rules her and she doesn't protest it. In Brownings sonnet we discover that despite the fact that the sonnet closes with a demise note its more endearing than Remember which is so passing fixated. The entire of Brownings sonnet echoes with I love thee. I love thee absolutely, as they abandon Praise I love thee with energy. This shows unadulterated feelings and enthusiasm for her darling. We discover that she has exceptional and outrageous love, which is unaltered by people groups acclaims and faults. Just recall me, she is arguing, since she feels it will be past the point where it is possible to guide at that point or ask since death will be on her soon. The lady appears to be resolved to be recollected since she needs to keep a picture of herself in her darlings mind. We se that Rossetti contrasts the energy of adoration and enthusiasm of pain. She discusses old pains, enthusiastic issues that truly made her wiped out. We discover that for grown-ups confidence can be distrustful, yet for youngsters, they either love or dont love. The adoration that she lost has now been changed into his affection, there are no reservations in her affection. Grins, tears, for my entire life! also, if God pick, I will cherish thee yet better in the afterlife. She implies that if God grants, love will rise above life, past the hindrances of adoration. In Remember we see that the octave is a dreary call to be recalled, and as we go to the second part we notice a continuous change, that now she needs her significant other to overlook her since she puts her spouses bliss rather than her requests. For if the obscurity and debasement leave A remnant of the contemplations that once I had. 'The Sun Rising' by John Donne and 'To His Coy Mistress' by Andrew Marvell EssayThe sonnet A Birthday resembles a rainbow shell with all the shades of a rainbow, practically like a woven embroidered artwork. All the pictures here are sound-related, amazing and speaking to the ear, even pictures of nature are secured here, while in Villegiature there are progressively juvenile reactions to adore. The writer realizes that she adores him however attempts to demonstrate each time that she dislikes him when she obviously shows how profoundly and energetically she is in live with him. A Birthday with its oriental flavor and magnificence is greatly improved Villegiature. First Love by John Clare is a sonnet about all consuming, instant adoration and how it is connected to love and misfortune. I neer was stuck before that hour With adoration so unexpected thus sweet. The absolute first line passes on the brutality of feelings, struck, with the suddenness and pleasantness of the inclination. Her face it blossomed like a sweet bloom, this is one of the most wonderful correlation made to lady that she resembles a bloom. My face turned pale as dangerous pale, My legs would not leave. We are made mindful of adoration as an overwhelming feeling where the writer felt like a dead individual who wouldn't leave. He had an inclination that he was on the highest point of the world when she took a gander at him. He tumbled to profundity of despondency. His life and all went to dirt. She had such an overwhelming component in her that first he couldn't walk and now he was unable to see a solitary thing. His resources are completely lost, yet there is a trade in it. He was tongue tied and couldnt express a word to her and now he can convey through his eyes. His eyes talked as harmonies do from the string. In the last verse the artist is being philosophical. He is exceptionally certain about the way that his heart has left its home. It looks as if he was destined to kick the bucket and lose, in light of the fact that despite the fact that he talked through his eyes, the young lady said no. This is one experience, which he will always remember where love and misfortune are both included. All the sonnets are passing on affection and they have done it adequately by including nature symbolism, or correlations and once in a while even emblematic components. How Do I Love Thee? is a piece of 14 lines. She begins her sonnets as a numerical issue. I love thee unreservedly, as men take a stab at Right; I love thee absolutely, as they abandon Praise. Here metaphors have been utilized to look at the manner by which she adores him. In this sonnet very little of allegorical discourse is utilized. The tone is the equivalent all through. The title is very useful for the sonnet and you can identify with it also effectively likewise with the title itself you become more acquainted with what the sonnet is about. A Birthday is likewise a piece of 16 lines. All through the initial segment, the sonnet echoes with My heart is The initial segment of the sonnet is totally secured with likenesses and nature symbolism. Her heart is contrasted with a singing fledgling, an apple tree and a rainbow shell. The second piece of the sonnet is brimming with goals where it follows a sensitive example of raise me, hang it, cut it, and work it. The title by one way or another is unreasonably obscure for the sonnet except if we perused the last line, yet it would have been exceptional in the event that it were titled How Do I Love Thee? since she is giving a full examination of how she adores him. Recollect is a piece of 14 lines. Gone far away into the quiet land. This is code word utilized here to show how the writer is alluding to death. In this sonnet you don't discover a lot of allegorical discourse however all through the sonnet thee is a bleak climate. Villegiature is a sonnet of four line verses. It involves an end rhyme and an interior rhyme. The entire sonnet is a blend of clashing feelings and emotions. This sonnet has a great deal of nature symbolism utilized in it like pear tree blossom, dewy yard First Love is a sonnet of three passages of eight line refrains. It comprises of inner rhyme. This sonnet has a great deal of nature symbolism. Metaphors have been utilized like Her face it blossomed like a sweet bloom, My face turned pale as lethal pale Personification is additionally utilized like They talked as harmonies do from the string All the sonnets draw out the pith of adoration, however they may come up short on certain components. Like for How Do I Love Thee? the sonnet begins alright yet then it step by step moves from reality to. First Love however, is significantly more practical since it shows how an individual may feel while being infatuated. The emotions and responses are wonderfully clarified and in this manner gives an enduring impact on the peruser. Recall passes on a

Blog Archive Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley Essay Analysis, 20172018
Blog Archive Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley Essay Analysis, 2017â"2018 *Please note: You are viewing an essay analysis from the 2017-2018 admissions cycle. Click here to view our collection of essay analyses for the current admissions season. One look at the first application essay question for the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, this year may make applicants think the program has finally embraced the less-is-more movement in essays that so many other top schools have been joining lately. And to be fair, the total number of words allowed for Berkeley-Haasâs essays this season has gone down, but not by all that muchâ"dropping from 1,000 to 806â"so candidates still have a comparatively good amount of space in which to present a well-rounded impression of themselves to the school. Although the prompts have changed in wording, the kind of information the school wants to elicit seems largely the same. As always, you want your essays as a whole to encompass a range of stories and qualities that complement each other so as to provide an accurate representation of who you are today, the student you expect to be in business school, and the professional you will be for the rest of your career. What follows is our full analysis of Berkeley-Haasâs updated essay questions Essay #1: Tell us a six-word story that reflects a memorable experience in your life-to-date. Elaborate on why it is meaningful to you. (250 words maximum) Tip: A successful six-word story will pique the readerâs interest in the forthcoming explanation. Together, the story and explanation will share a specific and personal experience that helps the reader get to know you better, giving insight into your character, values, or how you would uniquely contribute to the Berkeley-Haas community. View sample six-word stories and video tips from the admissions committee. Before you start hyperventilating, let us reassure you that you absolutely can convey a meaningful and compelling story in just six words. Perhaps the most famous example of this is Ernest Hemingwayâs famous âsix-word novel,â which reads, âFor sale: baby shoes, never worn.â In fact, entire Reddit, Pinterest, and Tumblr pages are dedicated to these succinct narratives, and several publications and Web sites have regular contests to see who can craft the best six-word tales. So, Berkeley-Haas may not be the first to come up with the idea, but it does appear to be the first business school to make it a part of its application! In addition to presenting several examples for applicants on its team Web page, the Berkeley Haas admissions committee offers two key pieces of advice for this essay in a video application tip: using contractions (e.g., itâs, canât, wonât, didnât) is totally acceptable, and perfect grammar is not necessary. These are both important space savers. Thankfully, the school also gives you a 250-word essay in which to further elaborate on your mini story, so you can expound on some elements of the narrative that may not be immediately understood, but take care to not use that portion of this essay response to simply retell your story in more detail. Start by thinking carefully about how you want to present yourself as an applicant and an individual, and consider what you might say in your other essays for the program, to ensure that each piece you submit is complementary of the others and offers something different about you. You might consider this first essay the âcolorfulâ essay and the others more âserious.â In this one, you have a special opportunity to provide a window into your life experience and personality. Your six-word story should captivate and intrigue the admissions reader, leaving him or her wanting to learn more. (Almost by definition, the reader will be enveloped in mystery!) Then, the second, 250-word portion of the essay should unravel any mystery, illuminate your character, and clarify the significance of the core narrative in who you are today, thereby giving the admissions committee a critical sense of understanding. Essay #2: Respond to one of the following prompts: (250 words maximum) Tip: Responses can draw from professional or personal experiences. Through your response, the admissions committee hopes to gain insight into your achievements, involvement, and leadership footprint. Describe a significant obstacle you have encountered and how it has impacted you. If you choose to respond to this prompt, you will need to ensure that your essay conveys a sense of change, and to best demonstrate change, you must depict a clear âbefore and afterâ scenario. So, start by identifying a time when something stood between you and a goal you wanted to reach, or when something (likely unexpected) derailed your forward progress in an important area of your life. Consider incidents from your career, personal life, and community activities to find the one you feel is most compelling and reveals the most about you. For example, perhaps you faced a budget shortfall on a critical work project, clashed with a sibling over how to manage a parentâs health, or had a volunteer event you organized be jeopardized by budget or weather issues. Begin your essay by providing some narrative context that sets the stage for the disruptive moment or experience, showing your progress and mind-set to that point. Then, describe the incident or issue that interrupted or threatened that progression and forced you to revise or abandon your original efforts. Next, detail your reaction and subsequent decision(s) and actions. Finally, share what you learned from the experience and how it has altered who you are and/or how you now view or interact with the world. Having an appropriate story to tell is only half the task. Berkeley-Haas does not want to know only that you have faced and overcome a significant challenge but also how that situation has contributed to the person you are today. Describe how you have cultivated a diverse and inclusive culture. In business schoolâ"as in life in generalâ"you will encounter people who think differently from you, operate according to different values, and react differently to the same stimuli. And success in an endeavor often involves evaluating and even incorporating the views of others in oneâs efforts. With this essay prompt, Berkeley-Haas is hoping to learn how you view and deal with such differences, using the principle that past behavior is a fairly reliable predictor of future behavior. In the Berkeley-Haas MBA program, you will be surrounded every day by individuals who are unlike you in a multitude of ways, and you will need to work in tandem with and alongside these individuals when analyzing case studies, completing group projects, and participating in other activities both inside and outside the classroom. Note, however, that the essay prompt does not refer simply to participating in a âdiverse and inclusive cultureâ but actually cultivating one. The admissions committee wa nts to know that you are comfortable within such a dynamic, of course, but seems especially interested in hearing from candidates who have stepped into some kind of leadership role to actively bring various people together in a harmonious and productive way. Leadership does not need to have an official title attached to it, and it can be expressed in a community service or even family life setting just as much as in a workplace, so plumb all the different areas of your life for possible stories. Perhaps, for example, you organized a welcome-our-neighbors potluck block party in your neighborhood after a group of refugees moved in. Or maybe you instituted a mentorship program at your company, in which employees with different tasks and personal backgrounds were matched to learn from and support one another. Whatever your story, we recommend using a narrative approach to present it, but be sure to also share the thought process and motivation(s) behind your actions. This way, the admissions committee will take away both a clear picture of what you accomplished and the aspects of your character that inspired you and enabled your success. Describe a leadership experience and how you made a positive and lasting impact. As we noted for the previous essay prompt, you can be a leader without having an official title of some sort, and you can act as a leader in your community service, personal life, or workplace, so take time to fully consider all the different areas of your life for possible stories before you start writing. Whatever the subject area, you ultimately want to offer a clear narrative that allows your reader to easily visualize your actions and motivations. The admissions committee wants to learn about you through your experience, after all, not hear platitudes about leadership. Also, Berkeley-Haas is not necessarily asking you to share your greatest triumph as a leader but rather the one that had the most meaningful and enduring influence. For some applicants, the two may be one and the same, but this will not necessarily be true for all candidates. And although one might assume that if your leadership resulted in a long-lasting, positive effect, you were likely successful in your core u ndertaking, again, this does not necessarily have to be the case. If your team failed to reach its intended goal, but the experience had a significant influence on those involved, that can be fodder for an effective essay as well. Be sure that your description of the experience demands no more than one-half of your essay. The school is equally interested in hearing about the âpositive and lasting impactâ your leadership facilitated and also how you brought this about. So share your thought process and key decisions as well as the results, and keep in mind that the impact does not have to have been strictly on people. For example, you may have led the charge to clean up a local greenway and established a community group to ensure the ongoing maintenance of the area so that indigenous flora and fauna can thrive there. The keys to a compelling and successful essay response lie not in the size of the endeavor you led but in your actions and motivations, which will reveal important facets of your personality to the admissions committee, and to its ultimate significanceâ"to you, to those involved, and to anyone or anything affected by the outcome. Essay #3: (1) Briefly describe your immediate post-MBA career goals. (50 words maximum) (2) How have prior experiences motivated and prepared you to pursue these goals? (250 words maximum) Tip: You are encouraged to reflect on both what you want to do professionally after business school and why this path interests you. Yet again, Berkeley-Haas has reframed its career-focused essay prompt, this time removing the request to explain the schoolâs role in achieving your aims and narrowing the scope of the goal question to focus exclusively on your short-term plansâ"while also cutting back the word limit from 500 to 300 total. The school knows only too well that many candidates change their career goals during the course of the MBA program, given their exposure to new people, ideas, and options. Focusing on applicantsâ immediate post-graduate aspirations allows the admissions committee to assess where the individual is right now in his or her thinking and development. Berkeley-Haas wants to know what skills and mind-set are being brought to the table, so to speak, perhaps to get an idea of the applicantâs potential not only in the stated area of interest but also in the many areas the candidate may have not yet considered but could be just as successful. The concept of motivation is also key, so y ou want to demonstrate that you are a forward-thinking, ambitious person who sees business school as a vital step on your professional and personal journey. Note that the essay prompt does not refer strictly to skills or qualifications but also experiences, implying that the admissions committee wants to know not just whether you are capable of doing the job you seek but also why you want that job. So be sure to respond accordingly, mentioning any life lessons, personal passions, and other stimuli that have spurred you to this point and inspire you to push still further. Given that the word count for this essay has been restricted and the school does not explicitly ask you to detail your long-term plans or your vision for how Berkeley-Haas will help you reach your goals, we encourage you to think twice before using any space to address either of those topics and instead dedicate yourself to answering the questions it does pose in a thorough and thoughtful way. The elements this essay question demands are ones typically included in a standard personal statement essay, so we encourage you to download your free copy of the mbaMission Personal Statement Guide, which we created to help applicants write this style of essay for any school. It explains in further detail how to consider and present your career goals in essay form, with examples, so be sure to claim your complimentary copy today. Optional Essay: Use this essay to share information that is not presented elsewhere in the application, for example: Explanation of employment gaps or academic aberrations Quantitative abilities For re-applicants, improvements to your candidacy The optional essay prompt is the only one Berkeley-Haas has not tweaked this season, maintaining its directive approach in hopes, we believe, of focusing applicants specifically on the information it deems most useful and offering examples in the form of bullet points. This essay has no stated word limit, but do not interpret this as a blank-slate invitation to dump every bit of remaining information about yourself that you feel the school is lacking. And however difficult, avoid the temptation to simply reuse a strong essay you wrote for another program here or to offer a few anecdotes you were unable to incorporate into any of your other Berkeley-Haas essays. Be judicious in your use of this opportunity, and submit an optional essay only if you truly believe a key element of your story or profile is needed for the school to have a complete and accurate understanding of you as a candidate. Consider downloading your free copy of our mbaMission Optional Essays Guide, in which we of fer detailed advice on when and how to take advantage of the optional essay (including multiple sample essays) to help you mitigate any problem areas in your profile. The Importance Of Tattoos - 721 Words
The eighteen-year-old boy, who had dreamed of becoming a lawyer went out for his eighteenth birthday and got a gigantic tattoo of a skull on his forearm. Welfare Reform Essay - 1040 Words
Welfare has been around for than six decades. Since the beginning of its creation people have question whether the programs offered is helping the community. As American taxpayers, your funds contribute to welfare for others. Due to the large number of members who receives government assistants, it is not that simple to monitor every individual. But, I propose that welfare should be reformed. Society is abusing the access to social welfare and to change the downfall sure to come, the government needs to reform the accessibility and ownership of welfare because it defiles the reason why it was formed, it is creating a dependent nation, and effects taxpayers and people who really need government assistance. Well its not that easy, there are too many citizens who receive welfare to fully monitor everyone which is understandable. But, is society responsible for the well-being of others who depend on another? If so, what is the cost to the rest of the community? Is the dependent able body citizen to be held in any way responsible for them selves? How far must poverty go before society is morally bound to act? Theses are the questions asked about welfare by taxpayer as stated by Joseph Westfall. Billions of dollars are collected for welfare yearly, this money is collected from taxpayers and redistributed to those demonstrating economic need. The problem is anyone can make their self seem as though they need help. According to the common wealth foundation the government has went about ways to stop welfare fraud by creating American Legislative Exchange Council. Borderline Personality Disorder as Shown in Girl, Interrupted free essay sample
The movie Girl, Interrupted was released in 1999 and centered on the story of an eighteen year old girl, Susanna Kaysen, who has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The movie takes place in the Boston area in the late 1960ââ¬â¢s. Susanna Kaysen, is the daughter of a prominent well-known economist. The story is based around Susannaââ¬â¢s personal struggles and when she was admitted into a mental hospital for what she called a ââ¬Å"half-hearted attemptâ⬠to kill herself. Throughout the movie, she further describes what made her decide to check herself into the institution, what it was like there, and other thoughts she had toward the world. Diagnosis Susanna Kaysen was admitted into Claymoore Hospital and was diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder. In the beginning of the movie she started off by saying, ââ¬Å"People ask, how did you get in there? What they really want to know is if they are likely to end up there as well. I canââ¬â¢t answer the real question. All I can tell them is, itââ¬â¢s easy.â⬠Kaysen continued on by explaining how it is very simple to slip into a similar universe, one that is invisible from this side, but once you are in that universe you can easily see the world that you came from. I believe that Susanna Kaysen met the criteria for a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. The 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual lists several symptoms of borderline personality disorder, and to be diagnosed she had to meet at least 5 of them (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). In many cases, a person that has been diagnosed with BPD and has arrived in a mental health emergency room have intentionally hurt themselves in one way or another, ranging from alcohol and substance abuse, delinquency, unsafe sex, and reckless driving (Coffey et. al., 2011; Sherry Whilde, 2008). Other situations that can occur in a person diagnosed with BPD are shifts in their moo ds, having an unstable self-image, impulsivity, unstable relationships, anger, and physical aggression and/or violence. The first of the criteria for BPD in Girl, Interrupted, was having suicidal thoughts and doing things to contribute to a possible suicide by attempting what Susanna called a ââ¬Å"half-hearted attemptâ⬠to kill herself by taking a bottle of aspirin with vodka. In the movie, she stated that she has a headache, which I believe could have been true to a point, but she also was feeling more and more pressure from her family and friends to be more ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠and at the same time there was a fallout with the teacher she had been having an affair with. The second criteria was inflicting harm on the body by cutting or bruising. After she attempted suicide, she was rushed to the emergency room the camera angle switched from everybody frantically moving around to help to her wrists. She had bruises all over her wrists and she kept telling the doctors she didn ââ¬â¢t have any bones in her hand. It doesnââ¬â¢t explain how she got the bruises anywhere in the movie, but I can assume it was by some type of self-harm. Physical discomfort offers relief from emotional suffering by ââ¬Å"snappingâ⬠them out of their ââ¬Å"emotional overload.â⬠The third criteria was Susannaââ¬â¢s attempts to remain in the relationships to avoid feeling abandoned. Toward the middle of the movie, she has a flashback of the affair she had with one of the teachers and with a guy that she met after her high school graduation. In both cases, she was having unsafe sex and staying in the relationships so that she felt wanted and loved, and not rejected. The fourth criteria was filling the emptiness that was being felt by doing something she knew wasnââ¬â¢t right but gave her a thrill. Susanna felt as if nothing was going how she wanted it and she was the only person feeling that way. In the movie, Susanna and Lisa, a girl in the institution, decid ed to sneak out of the institution and go on a trip to visit another girl that had been there with them, Polly. Both of them knew they could get into trouble, but the continued on anyway. The fifth criteria was when she experienced a shift in moods and felt like she had no sense of herself at all. Toward the end of the movie, there was a time Susanna was convinced she wasnââ¬â¢t going to get better and she got defensive over what Dr. Wick was telling her about her diagnosis. She continued on and stated how ââ¬Å"she didnââ¬â¢t careâ⬠and her new favorite word to describe herself was ambivalent because she said it meant she didnââ¬â¢t care anymore and she was going to do whatever she felt was right. Dr. Wick continued on and asked Susanna if she knew what the word ambivalent meant, Susanna replied, ââ¬Å"It means, I donââ¬â¢t care.â⬠Dr. Wick then told her that the word actually meant undecided or in two minds, kind of like thinking, ââ¬Å"will I stay or will I go?â⬠and then asked Susanna if she cared about herself. I believe Susanna developed these patterns more in adulthood, but everything stemmed from her childhood events. Etiology There are several different views on how a person like Susanna could have developed BPD. One view that theorists have, is that an early lack of acceptance by parents may lead to a loss of self-esteem, increased dependence and an inability to cope with separation (Caligor Clarkin, 2010; Sherry Whilde, 2008). Children with parents that have neglected or rejected them, verbally abused them, or otherwise behaved inappropriately around them, have an increased chance of developing BPD. Multiple parent substitutes, divorce, death, physical and/or sexual abuse are also things that play a part in developing BPD. Sexual abuse is one of the most common contributors to the development of BPD and children that experience it at least four times are more likely to develop it (Huang et. al., 2010; Bradley et. al., 2005). In the movie, Susannaââ¬â¢s mom made a comment on when Susanna was a baby, she was changing her diaper and she turned around for a split second and that was when Susanna rolle d off the bed and broke her leg. She said the doctor put Susanna in a full body cast and her parents went on a 4,000 mile trip with Susanna buckled in the backseat in the body cast. There are also biological factors that could be contributing to BPD. Studies have shown that people with an overly active amygdale, a part of the brain that controls fear and negative emotions, and an underactive prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain linked to planning, self control, and decision making, can cause a person to develop BPD. More people that have BPD and that are more aggressive tend to have a lower serotonin activity than most people. Treatments Most clinical circles today use the dialectical behavior therapy method. This method focuses on the cognitive and behavioral techniques such as homework, assignments, psychoeducation, improving and teaching social skills. It also focuses on the humanistic and contemporary psychodynamic approaches by putting the client and therapistââ¬â¢s relationship in the center of their treatment, teaching the client proper boundaries and acceptance. Groups that use this method also help the clients by having them relate to others in the group and showing that they are able to receive support from them. Studies have shown that people that have been through this method have increased their ability to tolerate stress, improved their social skills, better attitudes toward life situations, maintaining a more stable identity and they are more likely to stay in the treatment. Other studies have been done to find that clients that take medications such as antidepressants, antibipolar, antianxiety, and antipsychotic drugs along with psychotherapy have benefited and fewer suicidal behaviors and hospitalizations have been reported. If I were to treat Susanna, I would most likely use the dialectical behavior therapy to treat her borderline personality disorder. The reason I would choose this is partially because it is more commonly used today within many clinical circles and I feel that having her focus on social skills, the relationship between her therapist, others in the group, and herself, realizing that she is able to receive support from others, and maintaining a healthier life would greatly benefit her. I think it would help her refrain from contemplating another suicide attempt, participating in unsafe activities and it would help control her anger, depression and any other emotions she had been feeling. Summarization The movie Girl, Interrupted was released in 1999 and centered on the story of an eighteen year old girl, Susanna Kaysen, who has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Susanna Kaysen was admitted into Claymoore Hospital and was diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder. In order for a person to be diagnosed, they need to meet at least five of the criteria listed in the DSM. The first of the criteria was having suicidal thoughts and doing things to contribute to a possible suicide by attempting what Susanna called a ââ¬Å"half-hearted attemptâ⬠to kill herself by taking a bottle of aspirin with vodka. In the movie, she stated that she has a headache, which I believe could have been true to a point, but she also was feeling more and more pressure from her family and friends to be more ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠and at the same time there was a fallout with the teacher she had been having an affair with. There are several different views on how a person like Susanna could have developed BPD. Children with parents that have neglected or rejected them, verbally abused them, or otherwise behaved inappropriately around them, have an increased chance of developing BPD. I believe that Susannaââ¬â¢s development of BPD started when she was younger but developed more as she got older. I also believe itââ¬â¢s because of the lack of self-confidence that Susanna had growing up and once she got older that affected her BPD. Susannaââ¬â¢s behaviors in the movie Girl, Interrupted are consistent with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, most likely contributed by events that happened in her childhood and an overly reactive amygdale, and which could be treated by the dialectical behavior therapy.

Robert Frost Essays (378 words) - , Term Papers
Robert Frost In Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, we have a man who stops in the woods to watch the snow fall. The speaker finds these woods to escape from the everyday stresses of life. My own interpretation is that the man finds himself at a critical crossroad in his life and he flees to these woods to reflect on his life. The woods that Frost illustrates are a representation of heaven. Although the man is turning to God for guidance, he is neither in nor near a church. Even still, he believes his location is irrelevant to God, who ultimately listens no matter what. In the second stanza, the horse is only a figment of his imagination. This horse is, in actuality, the speaker's own consciousness, a moment that we create something to relive the stress of our deepest emotions. It acts as an internal censor to keep us close to sanity, the value of life, and maybe even God trying to save his life. When he comes Between the woods and frozen lake, he finds that he is at a crossroad in life. The speaker ponders what direction to take, whether to live as the moral man that he is, or to take the easy way out by taking his own life. Frost portrays The darkest evening of the year, as the speaker comes to the end of his road. In the third stanza, while the speaker is giving His harness bells a shake, he is really contemplating and asking himself if he should go through with the suicide. The restful imagery of lovely, dark and, deep provides a simple, peaceful, and calm feeling that attracts the speaker to suicide. He realizes that he had promises to keep, but we can only hope that he decided to fulfill his obligations to God, his family, his friends, and most importantly? to himself. However, we will never know because as the poem comes to a close, there is no ending. Instead, the refrains only present a fade out and the poem is left open-ended. It is for us as readers to wonder if the speaker will create the only peacefulness that he knows or will he choose to remain the man that already exists. English Essays

Self-Preservation Is the First Law of Nature Essays
Self-Preservation Is the First Law of Nature Essays Self-Preservation Is the First Law of Nature Paper Self-Preservation Is the First Law of Nature Paper ââ¬Å"Self-preservation is the first law of nature. â⬠The above quote is an often heard line regarding an individualââ¬â¢s response to the demands of nature. It can be said that self-preservation and security outweigh the need to act independently and freely of the constraints of others. This is but one of the ways one can attempt to balance out the desire to act independently but also with the need for security. The idea of resolving these seemingly irreconcilable needs is brought up in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play Hamlet, wherein he writes of two main characters who attempt to resolve their need for independence and security. The playwright utilizes character to suggest that in the attempt to reconcile independence and security, it is ultimately the need for self-preservation that takes immediate priority. A character who is faced with the task of uniting his desire to act independently with his need for security is Hamlet. Hamlet shows a melancholy side to him when confronted by these opposing demands. From his soliloquies, the reader is immersed in the thoughts of a pensive young man who struggles with the need for safety and freedom. He debates whether ââ¬Å"to be, or not to be,â⬠and although he does not hold his life at a ââ¬Å"pinââ¬â¢s fee,â⬠his heart harbors discontent with the ââ¬Å"unweeded garden that grows to seed. â⬠It is seen that he is conflicted with the demands set upon him by his dead father, as well as that of Claudius and the people of Denmark who want to move on from the passing, and he struggles with the desire to resolve his need for security and autonomy in this matter. From this, it is seen that Hamlet values self-preservation over independence as his soliloquies are only words and not actions, and as such, are the product of his own safety thereby allowing him to immerse himself in the safety of this own thoughts. Furthermore, it is evidenced that he is a procrastinator in his quest for independent action, and this ultimately turns out to be his tragic flaw. Even though he is set upon the task of avenging his fatherââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"foul and most unnatural death,â⬠he stands ââ¬Å"unpregnant of his cause. It is clear from this that Hamlet procrastinates in order to preserve his own well being and acts in his own self interest despite the desire to take revenge upon Claudius for his fatherââ¬â¢s death. He does not wish to act independently when his security is put at risk, especially in the presence of a ââ¬Å"smiling, damned villain,â⬠so he procrastinates in order to put off dealing with matters that might jeopardize his wellbeing. Conversely however, Hamlet has been shown to have an impulsive streak in the face of settling his desires for safety and freedom. This is clearly seen when he ââ¬Å"follows [the ghost]â⬠despite the apparitions intentions being unknown. The ghost could be the work of the devil, only to condemn Hamlet to his own personal oblivion, however, he still actively seeks out the spectre because he wishes to learn the truth of the matters concerning his fatherââ¬â¢s death. As well, he displays decisive action when he says the ââ¬Å"rat dead, for a ducat, dead. â⬠This violent and impulsive action results in the death of Polonius who was eavesdropping on his and Gertrudeââ¬â¢s conversation. In both of these examples it is seen that Hamlet acts independently and decisively, with the underlying intent being that of self-preservation. He seeks out the ghostââ¬â¢s intentions because of his desire to live securely despite the rule of Claudius, and he kills Polonius only because he was acting on behalf of his own primal instinct to preserve himself. From these examples it is inferred that in his desire to harmonize safety and the need for independent action, hamlet acts impulsively to secure the security he craves. Lastly, it is seen that Hamlet exudes an aura of intelligence and quick wit when opposed by the daunting task of reconciling safety and independence. He has an innate ability to transform a turn of events to his advantage as is witnessed when the players come to put on a show. He utilizes them in order to ââ¬Å"catch the conscience of the king,â⬠wherein he collects enough evidence to cement the validity of the ghostââ¬â¢s statements. His ability to think quickly is invaluable, as this keeps his wellbeing a top priority while still unifying his need to act freely as well. Another character who deals with the prospect of reconciling his need to act independently with his need for security is Claudius. Unlike Hamlet who is a procrastinator in his deeds, Claudius is a man of decisive action. This is clearly seen when he decides to have Hamlet sent to England with ââ¬Å"fiery quicknessâ⬠due to his ââ¬Å"antic disposition. â⬠It is evident that Claudius does not deliberate on matters that require immediate attention as ââ¬Å"[heââ¬â¢ll] have Hamlet hence to-night. â⬠From this, it can be inferred that Claudius wishes o preserve himself against a suspicious threat as he manages to actively deal with his adversary as well. In combination with his decisive action, it is known that Claudius is incredibly manipulative in his desire to unify freedom and safety. When Laertes makes his return to Denmark with every intention of avenging his father by killing Claudius, he does everything in his power to giveâ⬠[Laertesââ¬â¢s soul] it[s] due content. â⬠He placates Laertesââ¬â¢s indignant spirit and as a result, Laertes end up ââ¬Å"rulââ¬â¢d by [Claudius]. From this, it is seen that Claudius utilizes manipulation for the sake of self-preservation while keeping his own independent actions an ulteriot motive. As well, Claudius has displayed a creative and strategic ingenuity when it comes to reconciling his own security and free will. He is determined to be rid of Hamlet, but his strategic nature indicates that he will do so by way of a cunning scheme. When Laertes and Claudius plan hamletââ¬â¢s demise, Claudius maintains a skillful approach that will allow ââ¬Å"purpose[to] hold there. It is evidenced that Claudius utilizes his own strategic nature in order to act for sake of saving his own flesh. While in the process of working towards acting independently, he also manages to keep his safety a top priority which is his ultimate motive against a dangerous opposition such as Hamlet. Lastly, it is seen that in his pursuit of uniting his own independent action and security, Claudius has shown a paranoid and guilt stricken side to him. He is responsible for the death of his own brother as his ââ¬Å"stronger guilt defeats [his] stronger intent. â⬠However, he cannot truly repent as his ââ¬Å"words [are] without thought,â⬠and as a result, they will ââ¬Å"never to heaven go. â⬠It is seen that because of his desire to remain secure in not only the eyes of the public, but as well as Hamlet and Gertrude, he cannot openly admit to his wrong doings. This is due to the fact that in doing so, he will risk the unbridled and justified wrath of hamlet which will compromise Claudiusââ¬â¢s sport on the throne. Just like a scavenger whose actions are cowardly in order to live another day, Claudius too, lives securely to rule in the coming days due to his own inability to act independently. In conclusion, it is seen that in the attempt to reconcile ones desire for independent action as well as security, it is ultimately the self-preserving instinct that takes immediate control. This is clearly evidenced by both hamlet and Claudius in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play Hamlet, who although take different approaches to this matter, fundamentally have the same mentality of keeping their desire to be secure the utmost priority. It is derived from the play that it is almost always security that takes precedence over freedom of actions; however it is up to the members of society to decide for themselves how they wish to approach their own attempt to reconcile their own need for security as well as the desire to act independently. There are many different approaches and ways to attempt this harmonization, and as such, each is tailored to an individualââ¬â¢s unique ability to decipher what it is that one really values and desires.

Globalization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 6
Globalization - Essay Example Only on the first issue can one reasonably argue that the purported center of economic representations - mainstream academic economics - plays a leading role in the debate. And, even then, the free trade, pro-globalisation orthodoxy that, with few exceptions, has predominated within mainstream economics for generations has been contested in all three areas: within the discipline of economics, in other academic disciplines, and outside the academy. Another important question is how abrupt the future changes will be. Abrupt climate change generally refers to a large shift of climate that takes place so rapidly and unexpectedly that human and/or natural ecosystems have difficulty to adapt. Globalisation has increased migration, which resulted in deforestation and global warming. Since 1850 A.D. the climate is dominated by a clear steady warming trend, which has become known as global warming. This warming is particularly noteworthy because the rate of temperature increase is enormously high. In addition, the recent 50-100 years have been the time of unprecedented growth of human activities, accompanied by industrialisation, massive deforestation, and other human interferences with the nature with a thoughtful (harmful) effect on the environment. The natural agents, exerting their influence upon climate has been thus recruiting with a new powerful mean to produce sizeable changes in the climate. One of the essential problems of the present days is to answer the question to what degree the mankind may be responsible for the present-day climate warming. Is the observed global warming just of natural origin, or does it have certain anthropogenic component Is the fact that the climate is getting warmer the result of human insensitive approach to its habitat Is this warming to continue in the future and how serious are the potential environmental consequences If so, the problem of the worldwide increasing air temperature comes to an end as the strictly scientific discipline, but became the uneasy task for everybody on this planet. For about the last decade, there has been an ongoing debate on the contribution of human activities to the global warming of the past century and especially on how anthropogenic activity will contribute to further warming that may occur during the twenty-first century. What is the physical basis for the fear of human-induced changes Similarly to other living organisms in all epochs, the mankind has influenced surrounding environment. However, an impact of human activities has drastically increased after the Industrial Revolution that began in the mid-eighteenth century in the UK and at the present time embraces the continental and/or global scales. The industrial revolution began with the invention of the steam engine. The most important human activities at present that may have an impact on both regional and global climate are connected with: 1. the combustion of fossil fuels and the biomass burning that produce GHG, 2. the

Climate Change and Soil Formation in Southern England Essay
Climate Change and Soil Formation in Southern England - Essay Example At the same time there has also been an increase in the population, and a change in the way individuals make a living and support themselves and their families. The first people to live in southern England were hunters and gatherers, but they slowly evolved into farmers as more people inhabited the area and methods of farming improved. Later, another change occurred with the coming of the Industrial Revolution, which changed farmers into industrial workers. These changes, along with climate changes have had an impact on the soil in southern England (Jarvis, 1984, 12). The start of climate change and its effect on soil began in southern England with the ice age. Approximately one-third of the earth was covered in snow and ice, and due to its location in the northern hemisphere, England was affected. While much of the country was covered year round with ice and snow, the southern parts occasionally had periods where the temperature would raise enough to melt some of the snow and ice and provide precipitation for the soil underneath (Bridges, 1997, 36). However, due to the cold temperatures, the ice age slowed the process of soil formation and change, essentially slowing the rate soil was able to intake precipitation. It also slowed the speed at which organic matter decomposed and the rate of plant and vegetation growth. This in return slowed the rate at which the soil could consume needed nutrients and organic matter, which slowed the entire process of formation and change. The ice age made an important contribution to the soil of southern England by bringing in new soil. The ice and snow that covered the area was brought from the north, and with it came a large amount of debris that included fine particles, small rocks, and even huge boulders (Bridges, 1997, 36). When the ice melted, the debris remained and became embedded in the soil. This provided the ground with a large amount of parent material in which young soil was able to begin formation and maturation. In certain areas, the effects of the ice age on soil and landscape can still be seen today. After the ice age passed and the climate changed to warmer weather, people started migrating from other parts of Europe into England. This was considered the Neolithic period and started around 4500 B.C. This period of time was essentially similar to the Stone Age, when houses, buildings, fences, etc. where all constructed out of rocks and stones. Many of these structures still exist, while others have been torn down or broken apart. This had an impact on the soil in southern England, due to the fact that remnants of this period, in the form of small rocks can be found embedded in the soil in certain areas. In addition, during this time and even into the Bronze Age, individuals moving to England were beginning to develop agriculture fields. These early farmers impacted the soil on their land by using domestic waste as fertilizer to provide extra nutrients and organic materials to the soil and the crops they were trying to grow. In addition to using fertilize during the Bronze Age to change the soil, tools, such as the plow, were introduced that assisted individuals in developing fields for agriculture. This led to farmers having the ability to grow a crop, plow the ground, and immediately replant a new crop. The constant presence of plant growth on

Alcohol consumption Essay Example for Free
Alcohol consumption Essay Drinking too much ââ¬â on a single occasion or over time ââ¬â can take a serious toll on your health. Hereââ¬â¢s how alcohol can affect your body: Brain: Alcohol interferes with the brainââ¬â¢s communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination. Heart: Drinking a lot over a long time or too much on a single occasion can damage the heart, causing problems including: â⬠¢CARDIOMYOPATHY ââ¬â STRETCHING AND DROOPING OF HEART MUSCLE â⬠¢ARRHYTHMIAS ââ¬â IRREGULAR HEART BEAT. â⬠¢STROKE â⬠¢HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Research also shows that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol may protect healthy adults from developing coronary heart disease. Liver: Heavy drinking takes a toll on the liver, and can lead to a variety of problems and liver inflammations including: â⬠¢STEATOSIS, OR FATTY LIVER â⬠¢ALCOHOLIC HEPATITIS â⬠¢FIBROSIS â⬠¢CIRRHOSIS Pancreas: Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can eventually lead to pancreatitis, a dangerous inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the pancreas that prevents proper digestion. Cancer: Drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of developing certain cancers, including cancers of the: â⬠¢MOUTH â⬠¢ESOPHAGUS â⬠¢THROAT â⬠¢LIVER â⬠¢BREAST Immune System: Drinking too much can weaken your immune system, making your body a much easier target for disease. Chronic drinkers are more liable to contract diseases like pneumonia and tuberculosis than people who do not drink too much. Drinking a lot on a single occasion slows your bodyââ¬â¢s ability to ward off infections ââ¬â even up to 24 hours after getting drunk Consequences of drinking too much Alcohol enters your bloodstream as soon as you take your first sip. Alcoholââ¬â¢s immediate effects can appear within about 10 minutes. As you drink, you increase your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level, which is the amount of alcohol present in your bloodstream. The higher your BAC, the more impaired you become by alcoholââ¬â¢s effects. These effects can include.

Attention Hyperactive Deficit Disorder Essays -- essays papers
Attention Hyperactive Deficit Disorder ââ¬Å"You know how it feels when youââ¬â¢re leaning back in your chair and itââ¬â¢s just about to fall over? I feel like that all the time!â⬠This is how a person affected with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) feels every day. ADHD refers to a family of related disorders that interfere with an individual's capacity to regulate activity level, inhibit behavior, and attend to tasks in developmentally appropriate ways. Some statistics: 75% people with ADD get divorced 50% stay behind a grade 46% have been suspended 11% have been expelled 3-5% (going on 15-20%) school aged population has it. 2.5 - 3 million school aged children have it The most common behaviors of ADHD fall into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. People with ADHD may show several signs of being consistently inattentive. They may have a pattern of being hyperactive and impulsive, or they may show all three types of behavior. Inattention is when people have a hard time keeping their minds on any one thing and may get bored with a task after only a few minutes. They may find it agonizing to do homework without getting bored. Often they will forget to plan ahead by writing down the assignment or bringing home the right books. When finally trying to do work they may find themselves drifting to something else; as a result, work will rarely get done. People who are hyperactive always seem to be in motion; they cannot sit still in one position. They may squirm in their seat or talk incessantly. Sitting through a single class could be an impossible task. For example, hyperactive teens and adults may touch everyt... ...ouglas A. (2002). What's Wrong with Doug? Big Time Toymaker V. Chou Essay
1. At what point, if ever, did the parties have a contract? I believe that there were two contracts made in this scenario. The first one was the verbal contract that sated that the stipulations of price and the fact that there needed to be a written contract before distributing the product. The email, since it was in writing can also count as a written contract; both parties had knowledge that there would be some sort of written agreement. Chou was in the right to think that the email stating the key terms and agreements counts as a contract. 2. What facts may weigh in favor of or against Chou in terms of the partiesââ¬â¢ objective intent to contract? The facts that Chou was in a verbal agreement with BTT will be helpful in proving that they had a preliminary agreement pending a written one. The fact that an email was sent to him with all the key terms, price, time frames and obligations is also helpful in proving that Chou had a valid agreement with BTT. I believe that that email would count as a binding contract since both parties had a promise pending performances. This was a mutual assessment in which there was an offer by BTT and an acceptance by Chou. 3. Does the fact that the parties were communicating by e-mail have any impact on your analysis in Questions 1 and 2 (above)? In a way it does because when I think of an agreement I think of it as a written and signed agreement by both parties. However BTT did not specify in what kind of writing this contract needed to be. They did not specify if there was need to sign, notified or have witnesses for the contract. Email communication between two people describing the key terms of a contract and having both of them acknowledge the key terms to me serves a contract. While there was no signature, it had both partiesââ¬â¢ names on it, it could be said that it was an E-signature. Also we have to keep in mind that the terms were also discussed verbally prior to the email being sent. 4. What role does the statute of frauds play in this contract? I believe that this email communication meets the statute of frauds and the fact that it had the named of the people in business counts as a contract. There have been cases were the name at the end of an email counts as a signature, example Stevens v. Publicis, were the publicis won because the name of both parties were in the written emails. In this case both parties names are on the emails and that signaled both parties intent to do business. 5. Could BTT avoid this contract under the doctrine of mistake? Explain. Would either party have any other defenses that would allow the contract to be avoided? I think that BTT might have a chance to void the contract under the doctrine of mistake because they can claim that Chou misunderstood the fact that the emails meant that he was able to go ahead and distribute the product, making it a bi ding contract. However it was clear that the email stated the facts of the contract and BTT did not specify that Chou should in fact continue to draft the contract for both parties to sign. I think that BTT would have a hard time voiding the contract under the doctrine of mistake. I think that fact there was no specification to how the contract would be written leaves a lot of vague results. BTT should have been more specific in their emails saying that Chou should still have to draft a contract agreement and that the email was not enough for the contract. In this scenario BTT would have a ch ance at voiding the contract. 6. Assuming, arguendo, that this e-mail does constitute an agreement, what consideration supports this agreement? The fact that BTT promised distribution rights to Chou pending an agreement counts as consideration. In this case, something of value was put on the line by both parties, entering them into an agreement to exchange mutual performances. In this case there was also a value that we can determine, and that was $25,000 paid to Chou in exchange for exclusive negotiation rights. I think that consideration was present in this agreement, making a valid contract. At the end of the scenario, BTT states that it is not interested in distributing Chouââ¬â¢s new strategy game, Strat. Assuming BTT and Chou have a contract, and BTT has breached the contract by not distributing the game, discuss what remedies might or might not apply. In this scenario the remedies that would apply would be, compensatory damages because in this case Chou suffered a loss of potential profits that he would have made by his new game. It would also repay him as if BTT had not breached the contract. I think that if he could not claim compensatory damages then he would also be able to claim consequential damages because it states that it compensates the non-breaching party for foreseeable indirect loses. It also states that it involves a unique circumstance beyond the contract. In this case the contract BTT made was taken over by someone else who at the end did not want to do business with Chou. Restitution and Liquidated damages do not applied to this because there was no unjust enrichment by BTT due to the breach of contract. BTT and Chou did not agree to any damages ahead of time there fore liquidated damages does not apply.

Herbal Anti Cancer Medicine The Vinca Alkaloids Isolated...
The first herbal anti-cancer medicine was the vinca alkaloids isolated from the Madagascar periwinkle plant, Catharanthus roseus. Extracts from this plant was found to have therapeutic anti-tumour activity and clinically began being used as Vinblastine and Vincristine in 1960. [2] The mechanism of Vinca Alkaloids is the inhibition of microtubules. The drug prevents the alignment of daughter chromosomes by depolymerizing the tubulin molecules inhibiting the formation of spindle fibres ultimately causing mitosis arrest and killing dividing cells. [3] This class of drug is at danger due to resistance mechanisms via the over expression of multi-drug associated p-glycoprotein which acts as an efflux pump to remove the drug out of the cell. [5] Resistance has led to the development of second generation Vinca Alkoids ââ¬â Vinorelbine and Vinflunine. these drugs disrupt microtubule formation by alternate methods compared to the older generation hence prolonging multi-drug resistance and anti-angiogenesis which prevents new blood vessels forming to the tumour. From clinical studies Vinorelbine is approved for treatment of Non-small cell lung cancer, (Gregory et al. 2000) over 15 trials with Vinorelbine as monotherapy has produced an overall response rate of 23.6% increasing patientââ¬â¢s survival. A phase 3 trial from an Italian study in 1999 (The Elderly Lung Cancer, Vinorelbine) found that ââ¬Ëmonotherapy vinorelbine seemed reasonable in the elderly whom polychemotherapy is not possibleââ¬â¢.Show MoreRelatedHerbal medicin e is the traditional medical practice and itââ¬â¢s an important part of medicine to this1200 Words à |à 5 PagesHerbal medicine is the traditional medical practice and itââ¬â¢s an important part of medicine to this day.
